History

Saint Mary’s Parish was founded in 1855 with a wood framed church; a more permanent and larger Gothic-style

 church was built for the parish in 1864. The gothic-style church burned to the ground in 1920 and the construction of a new building starting in 1922 with construction ending in 1931. The church is similar to a 5th century basilica in Ravenna

. In 1937, St. Mary’s became the Cathedral of the St. Cloud Diocese after a fire burned Holy Angels Church, St. Cloud’s diocese for almost 60 years.

Located within St. Mary’s is a shrine to Saint Cloud including a number of relics, like a bone fragment from Saint Cloud himself and others from five other saints.
