Carteret was created as the borough of Roosevelt on 11 April 1906, incorporating Woodbridge Township
, and was a result of a referendum on 22 May 1906. Roosevelt was renamed Carteret on 7 November 1922, and was also called Carteret between 19 December 1921 and 16 January 1922. Carteret was named after Sir George Carteret
