. Carleton North has around 675 students, and was opened for the first time in the 1977-1978 school year. It is the only high school in the world to still participate in "potato break", in which students start school two weeks before Labour Day
to compensate for a two week break at the end of September and the beginning of October. Historically, students got three weeks off, but over the years it has been lowered to 2 1/2 weeks and again to 2 weeks. Carleton North students take pride in potato break because it is not just a question of academic struggle or economic sense, it is a matter of culture.
