Background

CAT-iq was designed for IP voice services in the next generation networks and is based on the regulatory framework of the DECT technology standard.

CAT-iq is fully backward compatible to DECT GAP and focuses on high quality wideband VoIP as well as low bit-rate data applications.

CAT-iq is a registered trademark (word and picture mark) in 47 countries worldwide.

CAT-iq Profile Overview

The CAT-iq profiles are split between voice and data service:
  • CAT-iq 1.0 - "HD Voice"
  • CAT-iq 2.0 - "Multi Line"
  • CAT-iq 2.1 - "Green"
  • CAT-iq 3.0 - "Internet Ready"
  • CAT-iq 4.0 - "Intelligent Networking"

Within the voice profiles, the revisions are sequential, starting with CAT-iq 1.0 that provides basic wideband voice.

CAT-iq 2.0 supersedes and includes CAT-iq wideband voice service, providing additional voice related service.

Similarly CAT-iq 2.1 will supersede and emcompass CAT-iq 2.0 (should CAT-iq 2.2 or 2.3 profiles be created in the future the principle will be the same).

The data profiles CAT-iq 3.0 and 4.0 can either be considered in isolation for data only devices or as a complementary service to the voice enabled devices.

Interoperability

CAT-iq allows carriers to introduce gateways with integrated DECT/CAT-iq 2.0 base stations that will work with any certified CAT-iq 2.0 handset.

This means feature richness can be guaranteed across different vendors irrespective of what silicon or Software protocol stack implementation is in the base station or handset.

CAT-iq 2.0 brings the ability to carriers to offer multiple lines to their customers.

CAT-iq 2.0 Certification is based on the interoperability of base and handset, and the backward compatibility of CAT-iq to GAP (CAT-iq does not care what silicon vendor’s chip is on either side).

The Home Gateway Initiative HGI has been instrumental in working alongside the DECT Forum

to ensure the CAT-iq specification meets the carrier requirements.

With CAT-iq integrated into the Home Gateway, it is imperative that interoperability exists across different chip vendors.

The DECT Forum’s CAT-iq 2.0 Certification program will ensure that this is the case with a specific focus on testing the over-the-air protocol, in addition to ensuring the devices will meet the RF and enhanced audio requirements as specified.

Supplementary to the Certification program is the vendor IOP events, which further enhance the testing of feature compatibility between devices from different vendors.

Goal of Certification Program

The CAT-iq certification program promotes CAT-iq to market stakeholders, e.g. end users, carriers, retailers as a technically credible implementation of conformity to a set of standards that will add value to their industry/lives.

It ensures interoperability of devices from multiple manufacturers for functionalities defined in CAT-iq. (Being compliant with CAT-iq standards tested comprehensively according to the functionalities defined as mandatory by the CAT-iq standards).

Finally the program ensures a mandatory level of quality requirement for specific product parameters to achieve consistent user experience of the different stakeholders.

The Certification program of CAT-iq 2.0 is open since December 2010. Participation in the CAT-iq Certification Program requires full membership of the DECT Forum
