He left Portland to study English at Providence College
in Rhode Island
, after which he moved to Austin, Texas
where he began again to focus on music. Buddy joined local band Piltdowns, supporting bands such as Spoon
, and gaining interest from local record labels.
In 2002, Buddy relocated to Los Angeles
, California, continued writing his own songs, and performed his first solo show at the Hotel Café in July 2004. He also played at one of his friend Greg Behrendt
's "Bring the Rock" nights at Largo
, where he met musician and producer Robbie Rist
. Together they produced and recorded Buddy's first EP, self-titled, which was self-released in November 2004.
Local KCRW
DJ Tricia Halloran began playing "Salt Point" from the EP and a radio station in Denver picked up on the cover of Kelis
's "Milkshake", which helped to boost popularity. Buddy was offered deals with UK record labels, but he chose not to sign and instead continued promoting his material and playing live shows.
