Brooks High School is one the largest public high schools within the city of Launceston and caters for the suburbs of Rocherlea, Mayfield, Newnham, Mowbray, Invermay and Ravenswood – a large portion of the city. The school facilitates year 7 to year 10 education as well as some specialized vocation training courses for year 11. Students continuing their education from Brooks generally proceed to either Newstead or Launceston Colleges and, ultimately, to the University of Tasmania.

History

Brooks first opened in 1948. At the time, it centered around a large blue gum

incorporated these grounds in 1990, the school moved to its current site at Newnham, whose design is based somewhat on the old school having large open spaces and separate buildings.

In 1995, Brooks High School also founded the No Dole Program. This program has been highly successful and has since spread across Australia to many other high schools. It has gained significant national press. Past ceremonies have included speakers such as former Prime Minister John Howard, Minister Brendan Nelson and Kim Beazley, a Tasmanian Premier and Governor, as well as footballer Dermott Brereton, late racing driver Peter Brock and current Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting.

Also, current Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting attended the school.

Curriculum

Brooks has maintained a largely broad curriculum with a high level of negotiability available in making individual student programs and caters for a variety of levels of study in mathematics, English and science.

Students also have the opportunity to undertake TQA [Tasmanian Qualification Authority] accredited courses in years 9 and 10 as well as to study courses not available on campus at various senior secondary schools via the Open Learning program.
