Wright is a 1981 graduate of Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University-San Marcos). He originally walked-on as a wide receiver
, played a season at running back
and then moved to the other side of the ball where he was a defensive
leader at free safety and was a member of the Bobcats' 1980 Lone Star Conference
championship team.
He went on to become a successful high school football
coach. In 2004, Wright was hired as assistant to David Bailiff
. Bailiff and Wright were teammates on the 1978-80 Bobcats teams. When Bailiff left Texas State for Rice University
in 2007, Wright took over as head coach.
