High school career

Lau graduated from Capital High School, Boise, Idaho after lettering in football. A two-time All-Southern Idaho Conference first-team selection at running back. Rushed for 2,071 yards and scored 34 touchdowns at Capital High School. Caught 34 passes for 120 yards and was named first-team all-state following his junior season. High school coach was Steve Vogel, a former All-Big Sky Conference linebacker for Boise State in the early 1970s. He now plays for the Rams, having been picked up in free agency.

College career

In 2006 Lau Started 11 of Boise State’s games at fullback and finished with seven carries for 47 yards, as well as five catches for 36 yards and a touchdown. The previous season he started all 13 games for Boise State at fullback and had two carries for three yards and three catches for 29 yards for one touchdown. In 2004 Lau was part of Boise State’s tailback by committee that accounted for 2,758 yards, an average of 229.8 per game (fifth-most in school history), and a school record 49 touchdowns. Lau started at fullback, where his blocking was instrumental in the Broncos potent rushing attack, and played some tailback in short yardage situations. In 2003 he was a backup fullback and special teams player for the Broncos and finished the regular season with 10 carries for 21 yards and two touchdowns. In 2002 he redshirted.

Pre-draft

Lau holds Boise State running back position record in the weight room in the power clean (403 pounds set in spring 2005), the hang clean (452 pounds set in spring 2005) and the bench press (435 pounds set in spring 2005).
