Lutz began his head coaching career in 1969 at Ironton St. Joseph High School

In three seasons at the school, he led the Flyers to a 20-8-1 record.When he joined Ironton he successfully drew players in from all local high schools and from Kentucky that contributed heavily to his success. At the conclusion of the 2009 season, Lutz was 344-75-4 in his 37 seasons at Ironton High School. During his tenure, he has led Ironton to the third-most playoff appearances in state history at 27, winning state titles in 1979 and 1989 and runners-up in 1973, 1982, 1988, 1992, 1993, and 1999.

Lutz has received numerous awards during his career. He has been inducted into the National High School Federation Hall of Fame. In 2003, he was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
