, the town has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²), of which, 3.2 square miles (8.2 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.86%) is water.

Blythewood also refers to over 80 square miles of unincorporated Richland County, as defined by the 29016 ZIP Code boundaries. The area includes several planned subdivisions, both with and without property owners associations. Law enforcement in both the unincorporated area and the town proper is provided by the Richland County Sheriffs Department.

Schools

Due to increasing population, the local school district (Richland School District 2) is expanding. Currently, the town proper has one elementary school (Bethel-Hanberry) one high school, (Blythewood High School) and an alternative school (Blythewood Academy.) The unincorporated area includes three elementary schools (Lake Carolina, Langford, and Round Top) and three middle schools (Blythewood, Muller Road and Kelly Mill.) Richland County School District 2 is currently building Westwood High School which will be located in the unincorporated area just south of Blythewood proper.
