Gameplay

Bloodwars is a browser based strategy/combat game which puts you in the role of a Vampire, competing in the cutthroat world of vampire society and trying to gain power within 'The City'

During the course of the game players have to do quests within the various parts of the ruined world, seeking clues to their own and the city's past that will help them defeat their enemies and gain prestige and power within the vampire society. The scarcity of resources will also lead to fights against other player vampires dwelling in the city, from which experience and honour can also be gained (experience also determines a players level, and experience from battles/quests also yields Points of Progress, which are used to increase a vampire's statistics ..... they can also be used as currency in the Necropolis servers).

Realm (server) types

There are two types of game that constitute Bloodwars, Necropolis based servers, which offer a basic version of the game, although it can be a lot tougher to progress at higher levels, and Moria/Underworld based servers. These offer a far more complex and involved version of the game, but with this it also offers more in the way of strategy and depth.

In either type of server, players start the game as newly created vampires, learning to survive in a post apocalyptic world where resources are scarce, and initially having to exist only on what they manage to find in the surrounding ruins and in the sparsely stocked shop (the shop stock increases, or unlocks, as players achieve higher levels).

Clans

Clans are a major part of most online games, and Bloodwars is no different. These are player created groups within the game that provide quite a lot of the 'social structure' of Bloodwars, and give many players the chance to 'meet' others playing in the server. There are several quests which require cooperative play between players, as well as various other features of the game which can be made far easier by participating in the clans (and in fact sometimes clans are essential to the success of a task), such as Expeditions, which give access to powerful creatures, but must be fought as a group if players are to have any hope of profitable success.

Quests

The quests within the game provide a vital source of experience and equipment, as well as giving limited amounts of blood, which all vampires in the game need to function properly (blood is also used to activate 'arcana' which will be covered later on). These quests are based upon the characters statistics, with a percentage chance of success is assigned depending on these.

The City

The city itself is divided up into 5 zones, each with a number of sectors (consisting of 12 territories, or squares, each). Vampires start in zone 5, and slowly make their way up through the zones, having to fight that bit harder for a square in the ever decreasing number of sectors (Zone 5 has 1728 sectors, Zone 4 has 144, Zone 3 has 12, Zone 2 has 1, and finally Zone 1 only has 1 square reserved for the first player who can reach it, although they then have to try holding onto it). Various buildings can be built within a vampire's square, and these serve various functions in the game from providing a basic level of resources per hour, up to providing bodyguards and police to assist in attacks on, and from, other vampires.

Races

Vampire races provide different bonuses that are permanent for a vampire, and initially there are four to choose from Beastmasters, Thoughtcatchers, Cultists and Absorbers, although a fifth race, the Cursed Ones, is available later on in the game.
