Bitwise IIT Kharagpur
Encyclopedia
Bitwise is an online programming contest. The contest is time constrained and posed with difficult programming and algorithms challenges, to be solved in a short span of 12 hours.

Bitwise was started in the year 2001 by the 4th year undergraduate students of the CSE Department, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

. The contest provides programmers across the globe a platform to compete, testing their ability to develop efficient algorithms to problems within a given time constraint. Over the last five years, the contest has become popular around the world. In Bitwise 2k9, over 3000 teams participated from over 50 countries.

Registration is free and open to all. Contestants need to solve a set of problems posted on the site using C

. The solutions are evaluated, not only on the basis of correctness, but also on their execution time and space complexities.

Bitwise 2010 was held on 14 February 2010 and saw huge participations from 65 countries. There were a total of 3500 teams formed by over 7000 participants. The First prize was won by team Eryx from Warsaw University, Poland. Team Ajaysomani from Google, India won the Second prize and the Third prize is awarded to team Urbo from University of Latvia, Latvia. The prize for the Top Indian Team also went to team Ajaysomani from Google, India.

Previous years problems are available for download and practice on the Bitwise website.
Enigma is a puzzle game which was incorporated as a part of Bitwise 2007. It presents itself as an exciting and appropriate precursor to our central challenge - the gruelling time-constrained, algorithm intensive Bitwise. There are a total of 25 levels with each level requiring a password to unlock it.
The puzzle itself was inspired by the Enigma machine
