The school has special connections with the village of Pwanii Mchangani in Zanzibar

. The school is split into three levels, the topmost one being the religious studies and modern foreign languages block. The first floor being the mathematics and English blocks and the bottom being science, music, design technology, geography, history and ICT.

The school contains a large learning resource centre equipped with modern technology such as interactive whiteboards and computer systems.

Courses available at Birley are:
maths, English, science (GNVQ, single, double & triple awards), graphics, woodworking, engineering, media studies, ICT (Dida GNVQ / ECDL Certificate), health & social care (GNVQ), art, music and modern foreign languages.

At the start of the 2009/2010 school year the school was taken over by new head Mr Wood. He is also the head of the primary school. Now by 2011 the school is run by Mrs Woodcock.

In the 2010 OFSTED school inspection the school achieved an overall 'Good'.
