Bilton is an area of Rugby
in Warwickshire
and a ward of the Borough of Rugby. It comprises much of the western half of the town.
Historically a village
in its own right (in fact, many Bilton residents still refer to the area as a village), Bilton's name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon
Beolatun (Beola's town), and it was mentioned in the Domesday Book
as both Beltone and Bentone. The Church of St. Mark in Bilton dates from the mid-14th century.
In the 20th century, Bilton was subsumed by the expansion of Rugby
and was officially merged into the borough
of Rugby in 1932.
The old village centre of Bilton still survives and is located about 1.5 miles from Rugby town centre. The village green
of Bilton contains the remains of an ancient cross and stocks. Listed buildings include Bilton Hall
and Bilton Grange
although the old village is today surrounded by modern housing estates.
The title Lord of Bilton was once held by Edward I, Henry III and Henry VIII. The title is currently held by David Lower of Toronto, Ontario.
