In 1969 in London, he founded his design firm with a second office in Silicon Valley in 1979 in Palo Alto. In 1974, he advised the British government on design education. He designed the first laptop computer in 1980. In 1991, he created a company called IDEO, Inc., a subsidiary of Steelcase Inc. with David Kelley and Mike Nuttal. Since 1988, he is a Royal Designer for Industry. From 1992 to 1995, he was a trustee of London's Design Museum. In 1993 at London's Royal College of Art, he was a visiting professor. In 2003, he was in Ivrea, Italy as a Steering Committee member for the Interaction Design Institute. Beginning 2005, he is an associate professor at Stanford University in their design program. In 2007, he was the chair for CONNECTING '07 World Design Congress that was held in San Francisco. He was honored with the lifetime achievement award at the National Design Awards
