In 1969 he began coaching at Widener (then called PMC Colleges) where he had a 2–7 record the first season. From 1970 to 1991 he never had a losing season and accumulated a 182–53–1 record, two Division III national titles and 10 Middle Atlantic Conference titles.

He was Division III Coach of the Year in 1977 when winning his first national title. His team also won in 1981. He was president of the AFCA in 1991.
