 in Philadelphia, where he was an award winning editor-in-chief for The Temple University News, its noted student newspaper. Before being hired by the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin in June 1960, he received the Sword Award for service to Temple University.

He appeared on more than 300 editions of ESPN's (The Sports Reporters) over 13 years, a Sunday morning show of debate among American newspaper columnists.

Controversies

Conlin drew criticism for failing to include pitcher Nolan Ryan

 on his Hall of Fame ballot. Conlin explained in a follow-up column that he was attempting to make an ill-advised point supporting pitcher (Don Sutton), who had the same number of victories as Ryan and fewer losses in a shorter career.

In November 2007, Conlin drew the ire of internet bloggers after quipping in an email that "the only positive thing I can think of about Hitler

, read by host Michael Barkann on Comcast SportsNet's Daily News Live: "I'm surprised that guy would leave the blueberry harvest to send that off." Conlin was suspended from DNL for one broadcast by Comcast, but was forced by his wife's stroke in July to resign from the show. The Daily News accepted the suspension but did not support it.
