. In 2011, he received the American Psychological Association's 'Distinguished Scientific Contribution' Award and the European Behavioural Pharmacology Society's 'Distinguished Achievement Award'.

His research has spanned many aspects of brain function, from neuroanatomy to neuroendocrinology and behavioural neuroscience. He is an acknowledged international authority on the neural systems underlying learning, memory and motivation especially in relation to drug addiction. He has been included on a list of the 100 most cited neuroscientists by the Institute for Scientific Information.

His wife, Dr Jane Sterling, is a clinical dermatologist and molecular virologist; he has a son who is a clinical neurologist and a daughter who recently graduated in psychology from Oxford University and in occupational psychology from Goldsmiths College, and is working in London.
