History

BPR started in 1986 as Union des Banques Populaires du Rwanda (UBPR), an alliance of cooperative financial institutions around the county. In 2008, UBPR transformed from a copoperative bank into a commercial bank, Banque Populaire du Rwanda SA.

Ownership

As of December 2009, the majority of shares in the bank are held by the Rwandan financial cooperatives that constituted the old UBPR. A minority stake in the bank is owned by the Dutch cooperative bank, Rabobank
