Academic Performance

Banchory Academy ranks amongst the top state schools in Scotland, performing consistently well in SQA examinations. A consistently above average proportion of pupils remain at school for fifth and sixth year to take Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher courses. The HM Inspectors of Education report in 2006 judged school accommodation as being 'weak', noting that it was insufficient for the rising school role. Nevertheless, all other school quality indicators were rated 'good', 'very good' or 'excellent'.

Sporting facilities and achievements

The school has access to a range of facilities that allow for students to undertake a full curriculum of Physical Education activities. These include a school sports hall for badminton, volleyball, indoor hockey and basketball, a swimming pool for swimming lessons and the annual swimming gala, and the outdoor playing fields of Tillybrake.

Banchory Academy were the first winners of the Scottish Schools Swimming Cup.

Banchory in the News

Though usually reported for its academic excellence, Banchory Academy has received some (albeit limited) for final year leaving pranks. This included the school being listed on eBay in 2005 and in 2008 when turf lawn was laid in the sixth year common room. School leavers since have been warned by the school's management team that similar pranks in the future will not be accepted, with the penalty of expulsion just one of the deterrents used.
