Part of BSA LifeStructures' growth was a direct result of firm's third principal, Dick Radcliff, emphasizing the importance of construction administration for all projects within the firm. Don Altemeyer, the firm’s fourth original principal, became president of the corporation

, the company changed its name to BSA LifeStructures in 2003 to reflect their understanding that all buildings are designed to serve the people who live, work and interact in them. Innovation and Evidence-Based Design

BSA LifeStructures is one of the innovators of evidence-based design in healthcare - an approach fundamental to healthcare architecture where operations and design work together to meet healthcare delivery objectives in a dynamic environment. The firm created one of the first nursing units in the United States that set out to improve outcomes for patients, family and staff in the healing environment. This 1999 project - the Cardiac Comprehensive Critical Care Unit at IU Health Methodist Hospital - used facility, operational and satisfaction data to drive the development of a nursing unit and “future-state” patient room that has become a national model in patient room design[7]. This project is one of the founding Pebble Projects for the Center for Health Design[8].

Evidence-based design is an accumulation of ideas and opportunities to improve the process for all whom are involved in the design. BSA LifeStructures utilizes a four-part approach of evidence-based design that includes exploration of facility design; operational improvements; research; and patient, family and staff satisfaction. Benchmarks are established from these categories to guide design projects. The process includes pre- and post-project evaluations through a partnership with Press Ganey, an independent specialist for satisfaction measurement and improvement services in the healthcare industry.
