Aviatyrannis may have been a contemporary of another ancient tyrannosaur, the American Stokesosaurus

. Aviatyrannis was even originally assigned to Stokesosaurus, and the fragmentary nature of the referred material fails to fully resolve the possibility that the two taxa are synonyms.
