Astereae is a tribe of plants in the family Asteraceae
Asteraceae
The Asteraceae or Compositae , is an exceedingly large and widespread family of vascular plants. The group has more than 22,750 currently accepted species, spread across 1620 genera and 12 subfamilies...

that includes annuals, biennials, perennials, subshrubs, shrubs and trees. Plants within the tribe are present nearly worldwide divided into 170 genera and more than 2,800 species. They are found primarily in temperate regions of the world.

The taxonomy

Taxonomy is the science of identifying and naming species, and arranging them into a classification. The field of taxonomy, sometimes referred to as "biological taxonomy", revolves around the description and use of taxonomic units, known as taxa...

of the tribe Astereae has been dramatically changed after both morphologic and molecular evidence suggested that large genera such as Aster, as well as many others, needed to be separated into several genera or shifted to better reflect the plants' relationships. A paper by R. D. Noyes and L. H. Rieseberg showed that most of the genera within the tribe in North America actually belong to a single clade
Clade
A clade is a group consisting of a species and all its descendants. In the terms of biological systematics, a clade is a single "branch" on the "tree of life". The idea that such a "natural group" of organisms should be grouped together and given a taxonomic name is central to biological...

, meaning they have a common ancestor. This is referred to as the North American clade. Guy L. Nesom and Harold E. Robinson
