Hector Montenegro had been the superintendent of Arlington ISD since February 1, 2008. On July 17, 2008, Mr. Montenegro was placed on paid administrative leave, and resigned four days later. Deputy Superintendent Jerry McCullough was appointed interim superintendent.

The AISD, as of 2006, enrolls 60,900 students making it the 8th largest school district in Texas and the 66th largest in the United States. It has an annual budget of $339,387,191 and spends $5,776 per year per student.
