Clubs and activities

Apollo High School offers a variety of social, athletic, musical, dramatic, and academic clubs to meet the needs of their diverse student body.

ACT / SAT prep classes

The ACT/SAT Prep Class is a three-week class offered once a semester and sponsored by Ruben Miranda. Designed to help juniors and seniors prepare for the taking the ACT and SAT, the class acquaints students with the test format, teaches strategies for working through each of the test sections, and gives students practice by using real test questions.

Students become acquainted with the test format, learn strategies for working through each of the various test sections and practice using real test questions. The class is offered once each semester from 7–7:55 A.M.

Apollo NJROTC

Apollo's NJROTC program is among the best in the nation and has dominated Area 11 (California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico) since 1970.

Cultural awareness club

The Cultural Awareness Club strives to raise the public's awareness of the diversity of cultures at Apollo High School. The club is run by history teacher Niya Gima.

Art club

The award-winning Art Club is sponsored by Barbara Dahlstedt and Julie Allred and promotes the artists and the appreciation of art on the AHS campus.

Best buddies

The Best Buddies Program is dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships. There are three membership types: buddies, peer buddies and associated members. The program is sponsored by Christie Watson, Jillian Eddings and Toni Cook.

Close up Washington DC

Close Up Washington DC is a week-long trip that provides students the opportunity to experience the political process firsthand in the nation's capital. Students in good standing may travel to meet congressmen and other students from all over the United States. The club is sponsored by Sabrina Lumm.

DECA

Students who are enrolled in Business Technology, Marketing or Advanced Marketing classes may join DECA. DECA is a nationally recognized organization of marketing students. Students attend leadership conferences, work in a school-based business, and compete in business, economics, public speaking, marketing and entrepreneurial events throughout the year. Scholarship opportunities are available. The club is sponsored by Jennifer Rice.

Drama club

The Drama Club is an after school extracurricular club . The Drama Club focuses on theatre activities that promote teamwork, acting skills, and public speaking skills. The focuses on such topics as Adopt-a-family, audition workshops, theatre games, and improv activities. The Drama Club is sponsored by Phillip Herrington.
ELIGIBILITY: The club is open to all students at Apollo.

Environmental awareness club

The Environmental Awareness Club strives to raise awareness of environmental issues. They maintain a public bulletin board, sponsor environmental causes, and take field trips. The club is sponsored by David Devlin.

Key club

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. It is a fun and rewarding way to make a difference and help the children of the world. Our goals are to build leadership skills, develop character, and foster inclusiveness while caring for the community. Key Club is the high school Kiwanis group. Key Club is a community service club who has been at Apollo for 35 years(in year 2010) and who is not planning to go away any time soon. In Key Club we participate in I-con, D-con, Weekend of A Life Time, Key Leader, and may other events with the South West District. The current Key Club Adviser is Krystal Claudio who is a Counselor at Apollo High School. . The Presidency for the 2010/2011 school year is Oswaldo Ponce De Leon. The Apollo Key Club is part of the Key Club International South West District Sub-District Black Canyon. The meetings are in the media center every Thursdays Starting at 2:45 P.M. right after school.

Future Educators of America (FEA)

The FEA is open to anyone interested in a career in teaching or working with children. The club meets to discuss various aspects of teaching and provides the community a valuable service with tutoring opportunities. This club also nominates the Teachers of the Month to recognize outstanding teachers. The FEA is run by Joanna Brady.

Guitar club

The club mostly focus on teaching and educating any student interested in the learning the guitar. The club is hoping for more exposure in the coming years and has high hopes for musical activities at the school.

Newspaper

The AHS Newspaper, Hawk Talk, is a monthly publication written and designed by students. All material is reviewed by advisor Jessica Dean. A basic journalism class taken in high school, a college, or an applicable summer camp is required for a position.

Student council

Apollo's Student Council is led by English teacher Amanda McAdams, 2011 AEF
Arizona Teacher of the Year. During her tenure as the adviser, McAdams has expanded the role of student council at the school. The students are responsible for organizing all of the events during Homecoming Week, including a parade, carnival, and assembly before the game. Other events planned throughout the year include assemblies each quarter to promote student athletics and blood drives.
