Club career

Bastos Lopes played for 15 seasons with hometown club S.L. Benfica, making his first-team debuts in 1972. After only seven first division games in his first three years combined, he benefitted from the departure of legendary Humberto Coelho - who barred him at the stopper position - to Paris Saint-Germain FC to begin appearing more regularly.

For nine of the following 12 seasons, Lopes started more often than not, even when Coelho returned from France

Personal

Bastos Lopes' younger brother, Alberto (1959), was also a footballer and a defender. He too represented Benfica (1978–79, 1980–84, 22 league games), appearing for five other teams during 11 professional seasons, always spent in the main division.
