Andrea Cornaro or Andrea Corner (Greek
Ανδρέας Κορνάρος) Hellenized Venecian aristocrat and very important historian and writer.
in the island of Crete
and was son of Giaccomo Cornaro and Issaveta ( Zampia) Demezo and also brother of Vincenzo Cornaro. He got married twice , firstly Carnarola Zen (or Zeno) and after her death Anezina Zen without having any kids.
He served as a commander in a galley naval ship and in his 24th year of age he took part at the battle of Lepanto
with his galley Cristo (Jesus Christ)
His seigniory (Fief) included the villages Voni, Zoofori and Thrapsano
today’s prefecture of Heraklion.
In 1591 he founded in Candia
(now Heraklion ) the philological academy of the weird (L’ Accademia degli Stravaganti). He wrote hundreds of poems in the Italian language and also the History of Crete ( Historia Candiana). These works though they have been saved they have unfortunately never been printed.
He died in Candia
and his burial took place in the monastery of St Francisco.
