Allerthorpe has a public house and restaurant, The Plough Inn, and a very popular eighteen hole golf course and lake used for all manner of water sports and fishing activities. Allerthorpe Common, to the west of the village, has a nature reserve.

The parish church of St Botolph is a Grade II listed building.

Thomas Cooke, the machinist and optical instrument maker, was born here. There is a memorial stone near the church gate.
