, 33rd Sovereign of the House of Osman. He attended Galatasaray and Harbiye Colleges in Istanbul and was Lieut. of Infantry in the Ottoman Army. He received the Collar of the Hanedan-ı-Ali-Osman and the Mecidi Nişan 1st class. He succeeded on the death of his cousin Mehmed Abdülaziz, as Head of the Imperial House of Osman on 19 January 1977, to become the fifth head of the Ottoman family in exile. Had he been the reigning Sultan, he would have been Sultan Ali I.

Life

Ali Vasib spent his first year in Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy in Istanbul. The Palace served as an enforced residence to his great-grandfather Sultan Mehmed V, who had been deposed in 1876, and replaced by his brother, Sultan Abdülhamid. The restrictions imposed on the former Sultan extended to his entire family, and were not lifted until his death in 1904. Ali Vasib lived in Istanbul until March 1924, when aged 21 years old he was forced to leave his homeland following the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923 and the aboliton of the Ottoman Sultanate and the Ottoman Caliphate in 1924. Like all other members of the Imperial family, he left Istanbul from Sirkeci Train Station and first went to Budapest. He lived here for a few months, before settling in Nice, France. As the former Ottoman Sultan Mehmed VI Vahideddin, had settled in San Remo, many members of the family had congregated to the South of France. After living in Switzerland for a short time, his cousin, the last Caliph Abdulmecid, also moved to Nice. The travel documents issued by the Turkish Republic to the Ottoman family on their exile were only valid for one year. Therefore, by 1925 members of the family were no longer able to travel, and it was due to the intervention of Ali Vasib that the family received courtesy passports from the French Government. Having approached his close friend, Captain Toulouse, the son of General Toulouse, this was made possible through the latter’s contact in the French Ministry, Count Castellane. The passports issued by the French Government referred to members of the family as being of Ottoman nationality and acknowledged their imperial titles. It was in Nice on 24 April 1931 that Ali Vasib married his distant cousin Emine Mükbile at the Ruhl Hotel. In January 1935 he moved to Alexandria, Egypt with his wife and her family. He worked for 18 years as the director of the Antoniadis Palace, which was used to house foreign heads of state and dignitaries during their stay in Alexandria. Once permitted to return to Turkey in 1974, after 50 years in exile, he visited Istanbul annually, and his wife rented a humble flat in the old part of the city near Sultan Ahmed Square. His memoirs have been published in Turkish where they became popular. They were transcribed from the Arabic script to the Latin script and edited by his son Osman Selaheddin. They give an interesting insight into the life of an Ottoman prince during the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire, and the hardships and difficulties faced by the Imperial family during their long exile.
