The governor of this province, Khalil Jalil Hanza, was killed by a roadside bomb on 11 Aug 2007, apparently by local insurgents. The province's police chief, Major General Khalid Hassan, and three other security personnel were also killed in the same attack.

Al-Qadisiyah became the 10th of Iraq's 18 provinces to reach PIC on 16 July 2008. In so doing, it reverted to its former name of Al-Diwaniyah.
