. It was founded by Dr. Joseph Sippy on July 4, 1836 when he brought 47 settlers to what was then the crossing of the Potawatomi and Miami Indian trails and declared, "This is the place!" The first building was constructed where the Methodist church stands now. Dr. Sippy's house, which once stood across the street from Viking Foods, was a stop on the Underground Railroad

The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.
