Shoe throwing

Agha Javed was nominated in a case of shoe throwing against former Chief Minister of Sindh province. He was accused of hitting the head of Arbab Ghulam Rahim on April 7, 2008 with his shoes inside Sindh Assembly building after assembly session. Arbab was hit on the face with a shoe by him when he was leaving the provincial assembly through a side entrance, evading the security personnel guarding him. In the corridor, a group of the PPP workers including some ladies mobbed him and tried to hit him with the shoes and ladies sandals. Though Arbab was with heavy security cordon, one of the workers hit Arbab on the head with a shoe, which was caught by the TV cameras and shown all over the world. Arbab Rahim was rushed to his vehicle and driven away out of the Assembly premises as some of the workers run after his vehicle and hurled stones at it. Earlier, Arbab was escorted by a police contingent to the assembly Monday morning and he avoided the main entrance while entering the building. As Arbab sat in the assembly before taking oath, PPP workers in the visitors’ galleries shouted slogans against him while using abusive language and flung shoes, which hit Arbab on the shoulder.

A woman PPP activist shed chappals in her hands and said, “This man said so many insulting things about a good woman like Benazir Bhutto. We will not spare him.” Senior PPP leaders like Nisar Khuhro failed to cool the tempers of the party workers. Earlier, Benazir had also named Arbab as one of the persons posing a threat to her life.

Three cases (FIR Nos 199/2008, 200/2008 and 201/2008) were registered against him under Sections 337-A, 392 of the Pakistan Penal Code, 13-D of the Arms Ordinance and Section 6/9-A of Control of Narcotic Substance Act at Preedy police station. He was arrested in a successful raid by Police at his home in DHA but surprisingly challan for keeping illegal weapons and narcotics was presented before court against him. Four cases were registered against him including manhandling with Arbab Ghulam Rahim, committing decoity, keeping illegal weapons and narcotics. Not only Agha Javed but his other family members were also after this incidence. Later he was released by the court due to lack of evidence against him.

The Shoe

  • Immediately after the incident, Pakistan Peoples Party activist Kazim Hakim offered Rs. 600,000- for the shoe used in assault on Arbab Ghulam Rahim. He said that he was interested in adding that shoe to his privately maintained museum, because the incident had taught a lesson to the traitors of Sindh.
  • Sardar Ameen Mengal, a leader from Pakistan Peoples Party, Larkana chapter offered Rs.9,000,000- for purchase of the shoe which was used to slap Arbab Ghulam Rahim in Sindh Assembly premises by Agha Javed Pathan. Sardar Mengal said that the shoe will be preserved in a showcase for coming generations along with a photograph of Arbab, so that no one can use foul language against the daughters of Sindh.

. Soon before return of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in October 2007, Musharraf had warned her that if she wanted protection in Pakistan she should be nice to him. Musharraf also told Mohtarma that he warned her not to come back until after the elections, and threatened her, that he will only protect her if she is nice to him. Earlier, Musharraf and his political party had lost popularity, due to the Judicial crisis of 2007, which was followed by a massive defeat of PML(Q) in the General elections of 2008, but before that there were two brutal attacks on Pakistan Peoples Party

processions, one turning fatal to Mohtarma and killing scores of party workers.

Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Tharparkar based PML(Q) politician, always used bad language and adopted insulting behavior for Mohtarma when he was in power, as Chief Minister of Sindh. Every party worker was angry on Arbab, that in spite of being a Sindhi, he was not honoring the Sindhi tradition of being respectful to women, had been talking indecent about Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, calling her by shameful names in public addresses, declaring her a security risk, and talking about filing a case of goat theft against Asif Zardari. Above all, in spite of sympathizing on Mohtarma's tragic assassination he started giving controversial statements, hurting the emotions of a lot especially PPP workers.

Arbab was CM when PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming motorcade was attacked near Karsaz by suicide bombers in October 2007. Workers of PPP never forgot all these acts of immorality, and their anger was multiplied when Musharraf's regime failed to provide proper security to Mohtarma at Rawalpindi, resulting in the loss of her life.

In the background of these tragic events, party workers of PPP justify themselves to give this treatment to Arbab.
