Timeline

1080   King Alfonso VI of Castile establishes Latin liturgy in Catholic church in place of Mozarabic rite.

1490   Catholic missionaries arrive in the African kingdom of Kongo.

1531   Battle of Kappel - The forces of Zürich are defeated by the Catholic cantons. Huldrych Zwingli, the Swiss religious reformer, is killed.

1539   The Six Articles, an Act of the Parliament of England, reaffirms certain Catholic principles in Henry VIII's Church of England.

1553   Battle of Sievershausen - Elector Maurice of Saxony defeats the catholic forces of Margrave Albert of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. Maurice is mortally wounded.

1575   Battle of Dormans: Catholic forces under Duke Henry of Guise defeat the Protestants, capturing Philippe de Mornay among others.

1592   The future Henry IV of France, King designated by Henry III of France, announce in a declaration, so-called "Expedient" his intention to follow an instruction in the catholic religion in the deliberateness to convert. ''(Also see: 1593, 1594 and 1598.)''

1712   Treaty of Aargau signed between Catholic and Protestants. Introduced Protestant faith in Switzerland.

1789   Georgetown University becomes the first Catholic college in the United States (Washington, DC).

1850   The Catholic hierarchy is re-established in England and Wales by Pope Pius IX.

1928   New York Governor Alfred E. Smith becomes the first Catholic nominated by a major political party for U.S. President, at the Democratic National Convention in Houston, Texas.

1988   Roman Catholic Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrates 4 bishops at Ecône for his apostolate, along with Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer, without a papal mandate.

1997   The Požega Diocese (Catholic) is founded.
