In the wall street crash, all of the people were selling the stocks that they had, but no one was buying, which led to bankruptcy.
Lets say that you just bought two stocks of sears (you can buy a miniscule part of a company), but since their company isn't doing well, you decide to sell it. Unfortunately, everyone else decides to sell thier stocks in Sears that day, so Sears goes bankrupt.
Imagine a larger scenario where everyone sells all of thier stocks, but the compoany can't pay them back. So all the companys are broke, all the people are broke, because their stocks are worth nothing, and all the banks are bankrupt. Confusing? Yeah.
After the stock market crashed, things went on a downward spiral. Things just didn't have much worth anymore. People had invested all thier money in stocks, hoping to become rich, but when the stock market crashed, the companies couldn't give them thier money back. So for many fathers, they now had no way to support thier families, and many debts.
This was the begining of a long Depression.
