History

In 1984, Urvashi Butalia and Ritu Menon founded Kali for Women, India's first feminist publishing house. Their objectives were to publish quality work, keep overheads low, and ensure that not only the content, but also the form of what they published met international standards. Within five years of its establishment, Kali had become self-sufficient. Over the years Kali has come to be seen as a significant publishing house within Indian and internationally.

Founded by Urvashi Butalia, who was co-founder of Kali for Women, Zubaan was set up in 2003 to specifically continue Kali's work. Zubaan, has inherited half the backlist of Kali so that reprints of many backlist titles are assured.
