Growing from thick, twisted rhizomes, plants reach 60 to 120 cm tall. With age, It has leaves that are sometimes marked with reddish brown tinting. it has 30 to 75 white to cream colored flowers grouped into a loosely paniculate shaped inflorescence

Z. glaberrimus flowers from mid July to September. It is found growing in pine bogs, savannas and sandy pinelands in the US states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia and North and South Carolina.
