He passed his SSC from Government Laboratory High School & gratuated from University of Dhaka.

Zia holds the highest FIDE rating ever achieved by a Bangladeshi chess player (2570 at October 2005 FIDE rating list). On the May 2009 FIDE list his Elo rating is 2553.

Rahman earned the International Master (IM) title in 1993 and the GM title in 2002.

His playing style is solid positional.
