XRay Magazine was a monthly, urban arts and issues publication based in Cincinnati, Ohio. XRay was published in editions of 5,000 to 10,000 copies a month. Forty issues were printed and distributed for free throughout Cincinnati's urban neighborhoods. XRay's stated goal was to be a participatory media project, breaking down barriers between writers, readers and editors. The publication was launched on Dec. 22, 2000 and ran through August September, 2004.

History

XRay Magazine was founded on December 22, 2000 and published 40 issues. The final issue was released in August 2004.

The magazine was originally started, owned and operated by Stephen Novotni and Arie Vandenberg. Vandenberg left the project in 2002 and went on to produce the Cincinnati arts publication, Artspike.

Novotni continued to publish the magazine and focused the project on community participation in the media, liberal politics and alternative arts.

The magazine was closed due to mounting debt in 2004. Novotni made an attempt to carry on the XRay project and revive Cincinnati's first alternative newspaper, the Independent Eye

Independent Eye

The Independent Eye is an underground newspaper, founded in Yellow Springs, Ohio in February, 1968. The first four monthly issues were mimeographed pamphlets, and in June 1968 it became a broadsheet. HQ moved to Cincinnati in January 1969...

, in 2005.

The new incarnation of the Eye was published online only through late 2005.
