Extensible Markup Language is a set of rules for encoding documents in machine-readable form. It is defined in the XML 1.0 Specification produced by the W3C, and several other related specifications, all gratis open standards....

 documents have a hierarchical structure and can conceptually be interpreted as a tree structure, called an XML tree.

This tree structure can not be divided into just root, nodes and leaves as normal tree structures. Although there is no consensus on the terminology used on XML Trees, at least two standard terminologies exist:
