The school has 1,386 pupils in both compulsory and sixth form education. Around 60% of students apply for sixth form. The school is notable for its orchid project which has won numerous awards including a gold medal at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show

A turf-cutting ceremony was held at the start of a major rebuilding programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families

(DCSF) as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme. It is designed to increase the capacity of the school to 1,300+ students and was due for completion in January 2010. The school will move into the new building in April 2010.

The school suffered from a fire on 14 July 2011. The fire started at about 2:30 pm in the old assembly hall. The fire did not affect any of the new buildings and no-one was injured. The Sports Center did, however, suffer smoke damage. The old hall is still being rebuilt .
