For a majority of its long history the race has been known as the ‘Herbert Power Handicap’.

Distance

1898 - 1899 held over 8 furlongs (approx. 1600m)

1900 - 1919 held over 11 furlongs (approx. 2200m)

1920 - 1971 held over 12 furlongs (approx. 2400m)

1972 onwards held over 2400 m.

1898 – 1978 was a Principal Race

1979 – 1980 was a Group 3

1981 onwards Group 2.

Name

1898 - 1919 the race was known as the ‘Eclipse (11f) Stakes’

1920 - 1992 the race was known as the ‘Herbert Power Handicap’

1993 - 1996 the race was known as the ‘Quick-Eze Stakes’

1997 the race was known as the ‘Perrier Mineral Water Stakes’

1998 - 1999 the race was known as the ‘Perrier Stakes’

2000, 2009-onwards the race was known as the ‘Herbert Power Stakes’

2001-08 the race was called the ‘Winning Edge Presentations Stakes’.

Doubles wins

Rogan Josh (1999), Arwon (1978), Van Der Hum (1976), Gala Supreme (1973), Sirius (1944) and Posiedon (1906) have all completed the Herbert Power Stakes / Melbourne Cup double in the same year.

Posiedon also won the Caulfield Cup (1906) after his Herbert Power win.
