Education

Students in the Wimbledon area attend Barnes County North—Wimbledon-Courtenay campus, a part of the Barnes County North school district. The district is split between three sites, the Wimbledon-Courtenay campus, the North Central at Rogers campus, and the Spiritwood campus.

New school controversy

The Barnes County North school board presented voters of the district with a vote on a $14.5 million bond issue for a new school building to consolidate all three campuses into one building. The plan hinged on "efficiencies" to pay for the plan, namely the layoff of 16 teachers and other support staff. The vote took place on September 21, 2010, and failed, receiving 49% of the vote, with 60% needed for passage.

Despite the result of the vote, the school board has voted 5-3 to reconsider a new school plan. The vote was made amid controversy on the board, with some members favoring remodeling current buildings already in use by the district. Members from the Wimbledon area have refused to consider such a plan. The discussion will take place at a meeting of the board Wednesday, January 19. A second vote could be authorized at that time.
