Earl of Panmure
Earl of Panmure was a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1646 for Sir Patrick Maule, a former Gentleman of the Bedchamber to James VI and loyal follower of Charles I. He was made Lord Maule, Brechin and Navar at the same time, also in the Peerage of Scotland...

. In 1782 he succeeded to the Maule estates on the death of his great-uncle William Maule, 1st Earl Panmure, and assumed by Royal license the same year the additional surname and arms of Maule. In 1831 the Panmure title was revived when he was raised to the peerage.

Marriage and issue

On 1 December 1794, he married Patricia Heron Gordon and they had nine children:
  • Fox Maule Ramsay (1801–1874), later 2nd Baron Panmure and 11th Earl of Dalhousie


Patricia died in 1821, and on 4 June 1822, William married Elizabeth Barton. Lord Panmure created a scandal when he departed to Italy with Christina Mackay. He remained with her, predominantly in Italy, until his death in 1852. Together they had one illegitimate child, James Mackay, who married Deborah Lyle of Nova Scotia
