Originally opened in 1975 as the second mall in Spartanburg, WestGate quickly became the dominant mall in the Spartanburg area. Its main competitor, Hillcrest Mall, slowly died and has since been replaced. The mall underwent a major renovation in 1996, adding a new wing and a Dillard's

 and Bed Bath and Beyond were previously a Upton's Department Store, and prior to that, a Meyer's-Arnold which opened with the mall. While the mall has one floor, its large anchor stores typically have two levels. The Regal Cinemas is located on a second floor above the food court.
