History and development

The centre was built in 1974, and underwent a major redevelopment in 1992.

Westfield Chartwell has undergone a massive $40 million upgrade. This has seen a Skycity Cinema , a new food court with 450 seats, multi-storey car parking for 270 vehicles, and many new stores in place. The grand opening of the refurbished Westfield was scheduled for Thursday, 7 December 2006, but the opening of the Skycity Cinema was delayed until Thursday, 17 May 2007.

Westfield Chartwell has committed NZ$33million to start yet another upgrade in January 2010. Farmers has committed to a new two level department store and a significant number of leading fashion brands have already signed and committed to the project. With top fashion labels already signed up to open their doors next year, Westfield’s move to invest further will see Westfield Chartwell reinforced as Hamilton’s top fashion destination.


At the completion of the Westfield Chartwell project the centre will comprise:
• 126 retailers
• A new 5,700m2 two level Farmers department store
• SKYCITY Cinemas 6-screen complex
• Foodtown supermarket
• 450 Seat Foodcourt
• Gross Lettable Area 28,500m2. The latest update to the mall was completed in October 2010.
