In 1977 Western Suburbs become a founding member of the National Soccer League, being one of five New South Wales clubs in the inaugural season. The club only participated in two seasons of the NSL, in 1977 and 1978. The first season was a relatively successful one for the club as it went undefeated in the opening five matches and leading the competition for a large part of the first half of the season. By the end of the season the club finished in 5th spot out of 14 sides. The following season the club remained competitive but finished in 9th spot. The 1978 season would prove to be a disastrous one for the club off the field, putting it under immense financial strain. At the conclusion of the 1978 season the club withdrew from the NSL and amalgamated with APIA Leichhardt, effectively bringing an end to the club.
