The recruitment to this Service is made on the basis of annual Examination called "W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc. Examination", conducted by Public Service Commission,West Bengal which is a three-stage competitive selection process consisting of a preliminary exam, a main exam, and an interview. The examination is extremely challenging and is considered to be the toughest examination at the state level. Apart from W.B.C.S.(Executive) many other top posts in different departments of Government of West Bengal

The Government of West Bengal also known as the State Government of West Bengal, or locally as State Government, is the supreme governing authority of the Indian state of West Bengal and its 19 districts...

 including Police Service, Commercial Tax Service, Excise Service etc. are also recruited through the same examination.

The selected W.B.C.S.(Exe) officers are included in the state cadre of civil service and appointed as "Deputy Magistrate & Deputy Collector" in the Pay Scale of INR (Rs.)8000-275-13500 [Revised ROPA'09- Pay Band 4 :Rs.9000-40500 Grade Pay Rs.5400, Starting Basic Salary Rs.21000 + Other Allowances]. The Probation period for the service is for two years. Professional Trainings are conducted at "Administrative Training Institute" [ATI] Saltlake - Kolkata , SIPRD - Kalyani and ARTI - Salboni, and then at different Districts and Sub-Divisions.

After Training the W.B.C.S.(Exe) Officers start their career as "Block Development Officer" [B.D.O]. The Officers of the cadre perform the key administrative functions at different levels of various departments of the state. However, W.B.C.S.(Exe) officers may also be nominated at a later stage of their career to All India Services as IAS
