Plans for the station were announced on June 14, 2008, with the station being part of a large-scale redevelopment of the Curtiss-Wright plant land that will include 800 housing units, 30000 square feet (2,787.1 m²) of retail space, an elementary school and a community center. Construction was scheduled to begin in 2009, with the station slated to open sometime in 2011. However, there were concerns about the contamination of the land the station and houses would be built on, and has required an extensive environmental remediation of the land. Construction for the residential development is expected to begin in September 2010 and the train station construction is expected to start in 2011. The train station is included in NJ Transit's capital program.
