. It lies about halfway between the cities of Hastings
and Red Wing
and about 32 miles southeast of St. Paul
. The population was 697 at the 2000 census. It is centered on the small community of Welch on the Cannon River. Like many river towns in the Driftless Area, it is situated at the base of the steep bluffs of the river valley.

The racial makeup of the township was 97.99% White, 0.14% African American, 1.29% Native American, 0.14% Asian, and 0.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.
There were 249 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% were married couples
living together, 4.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the township the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 113.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.6 males.
