For many years, WREO broadcast an Easy Listening format. WREO tried a light jazz approach in the early 1990s, then converted to Adult Contemporary in the spring of 1992. Since that time, the station has identified itself as "Star 97.1" but has retained the historic WREO call letters.

In 2009, WREO became the FM flagship station for the Lake County Captains
